The Rising Star Macau@15: 5th APCEA Business Presentation Contest

The 5th APCEA Business Presentation Contest, organized by the Asia-Pacific Communication Exchange Association (APCEA), ended successfully on March 22 at the Hengqin Campus of University of Macau after several rounds of a division contest, semi-final and final contests. Ten teams from tertiary institutions in Macau and Zhuhai competed vigorously for the top three prizes. Team “Mercury” from the University of Macau won the first prize in the final contest.

Corresponding to the 15th anniversary of Macau’s handover, the competition this year is themed Macau@15, aiming to take this opportunity to solicit ideas on how to make Macau more diversified in its economy and a top-ranking tourist destination.

The contest this year received positive response among colleges and universities in Macau and its surrounding areas. The Zhuhai Division of Contest was set for the first time this year where a division contest was held successfully on March 14 in the Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai (BITZ). Seven teams which represented seven universities in Zhuhai including BITZ, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Normal University Zhuhai and Jilin University Zhuhai participated in the competition. Two winning teams were finally selected to come to Macau for the finals on the weekend of March 21-22.

After the fierce competition in the final contest, team "Phoenix” from the Guangdong Institute of Science and Technology, which attended the contest for the first time, won the second prize. Team USJ of University of St Joseph, composed of international students from Israel, Thailand, the Philippines and the United States won the third place. Two "Most Popular Speakers”, voted by the audience, went to Chen Xingdong of “Phoenix” and Henry Feng of “Big Bang", the University of Macau.

Guests attending the final included Li Nan, Deputy Director-General, Counselor of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao SAR, People’s Republic of China, Wong Iut Peng, Functional Head of Tertiary Education Service Office, Chan Iok Wai, Chief of Division of Youth Organizations and Training, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Carmen Chan, Director of Language Centre, Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Prof Sylvia Ieong, Director of Rector’s Office, and Dr. K. H. Yung, Senior College Tutor, Chung Chi College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

APCEA built up media partnership with a wide range of media organizations this year including China Daily Hong Kong Edition, Zhuhai Television, People’s Daily Overseas Edition, Phoenix Net and Shen Zhen Press Group etc. Teledifusão de Macau (TDM) covered the contest. The contest also received strong support from Macau Foundation, Tertiary Education Service Office and the University of Macau.

The panel of judges included experts from various fields. They are Dr Javier Cuervo, Assistant Professor of International Business, Faculty of Business Administration, University of Macau, Dr Peter Jakubowicz, Senior College Tutor of Chung Chi College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Executive Director of APCEA, Prof Guo Zhenzhi, School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, and Mr Adrian Villanueva, Asia Business specialist of National University of Singapore.

Other commentators include Mr Jose Li, Editor of China Daily Hong Kong Edition, Mr Shu Xiaohua, Research Fellow of People’s Daily, Prof Wu Shujing, Dean of School of Foreign Languages, Beijing Institute of Technology, Prof Lin Ziyu, Vice President, School of Languages and Translation, Macao Polytechnic Institute and Dr Francisco Leandro, Assistant Professor, University of Saint Joseph.

APCEA Business Presentation Contest, initiated in Macau in 2010, has been enjoying a good reputation among Macau and its surrounding areas in virtue of its high English level and professional practicality. It has become an essential brand activity for Macau.

APCEA, the organizer of the contest, is a non-profit organization registered in Macau. Using Macau as a platform, APCEA aims to support scholars in the communication and media field and promote academic exchange activities, accelerating the development of communication in the Asian-Pacific Region and attracting more academic activities to Macau regarding the field of communication, education, English and business communication.
